Reciprocating air compressors use pistons that are driven by a crankshaft. These types of compressors come in all sizes, from small and portable to large and industrial compressors. Some are powered by electricity, and others with an internal combustion engine.
Compression not only produces heat but squeezes water out of the air which ends up in the tank. Tanks can rust internally over time and if this is not controlled, the rusted air tank can eventually explode causing considerable damage and even death. That is why it is really important to evacuate the tank of water regularly. Most air compressors come equipped with a drain valve at the lowest point of the tank. If you dont want to spray water all over the floor under the unit, you may want to consider piping it from the valve to another place such as under the floor or into a drain. Piped water will flow uphill into a sink because it is being pushed out of the tank by compressed air.
One time we were working together on a small project that John had lined up for us. I was all powered up and fully charged with air pressure like normal. Everything seemed just fine. I heard the buzz of electric saws and saw the normal saw dust flying around. Then, all of a sudden, and without any warning, my breath was taken away from me in a gush! I thought I was going to die. John had accidentally set his circular saw down on my hose and cut into it. It alarmed me at first, but before long John had me all fixed up and back to work we went.
