For that shop, I purchased an air compressor half the size and isolated it in a soundproof room in one section of the shop. I ran galvanized pipe under the shop floor to three regulators at three different connection locations. The machine I purchased for that shop as a 5 HP Ingersoll Rand model with an 80 gallon tank. At the 80 PSI required by my Dynabrade sander, the compressor would produce enough air from morning to night. I must say that that compressor was very well built. All I had to do was keep an eye on the oil level in the sight glass. At night, I would turn off the master air valve on the side of the air compressor, leaving the electricity on, to silence the compressor until the next work day.

These can be quite compact or larger for industrial uses. The tighter the threads on the screws, the greater the compression. This type of compressor does tend to run a bit smoother and with less vibration than other types.

Often they are louder than an oil lubed compressor, but the air delivered through one of these pumps is of a better quality. They are found for home use, and are great because they are low maintenance and start up quick in cold weather.

Most of airbrush compressors are extremely loud, so you need strong nerves to withstand all that. More expensive and more sophisticated models do not have these problems, but the question is how much it's worth. You have to find a balance when it comes to your needs and budget.

The compressor started right up and was soon pressurized and ready to go. I hooked up the hose and gun, filled the reservoir with stain, and started systematically applying it to the siding. The portable air compressor was on wheels, and easy to maneuver. I could see the dry wood soaking up the stain and I was happy I'd opted for this method of application. I dreaded the idea of having to brush stain on for hours on end. Once I had the first coat on I let it set for a couple hours while I took a break, then went back out and applied a second coat. This probably would have been sufficient, but I had read that the very best thing to do when applying stain with a sprayer is to go back and brush over the job. Doing this really drove the stain into the wood and allowed it to fill every little pore.

My familiarity with manufacturing hardwood furniture has taught me that about half the time involved in constructing each chair, table or cabinet is taken up with sanding. When you are trying to make a livelihood in the woodworking industry with hourly employees you must cut inefficiency to a bare minimum. This does not mean becoming a tyrant but, instead, removing any and all impediments that may be slowing construction, sanding and finishing.
