Compression not only produces heat but squeezes water out of the air which ends up in the tank. Tanks can rust internally over time and if this is not controlled, the rusted air tank can eventually explode causing considerable damage and even death. That is why it is really important to evacuate the tank of water regularly. Most air compressors come equipped with a drain valve at the lowest point of the tank. If you dont want to spray water all over the floor under the unit, you may want to consider piping it from the valve to another place such as under the floor or into a drain. Piped water will flow uphill into a sink because it is being pushed out of the tank by compressed air.
An important factor is also the factor of oil. The oil is used for lubrication of moving parts of the compressor, but it also has some side effects. For example, traces of oil can be found in the tubes that deliver air to your airbrush tool, so it can be mixed with paint. This problem is more pronounced if the compressor is older. One possible solution is to purchase an oil free air compressor.
A rotary vane air compressor uses a rotor and a number of blades in radial slots in the rotor. I do not fully understand how this works, but it has something to do with the rotor turning and the blades sliding in and out of their slots as they keep contact with the housing wall. This somehow creates decreasing volume.
